HYPNOSIS SCRIPTS
- Uses and Availability
For induction into trance to occur, there must be a catalyst. In what we might call ‘unintentional’ situations, this may be driving miles and miles down the highway (highway hypnosis) or watching an intense movie. For intentional trance, however, the catalyst is generally the guiding words of a hypnotist, whether spoken in person or via a recording.
So, where does the hypnotist find the right words to achieve the subject’s desired hypnotic goals? Does he or she just rattle them off from the top of his head? Perhaps a few loquacious professionals may do so - but quiet likely only after long practice with written hypnosis training scripts.
Scripts for hypnosis are available for a variety of uses. Individuals can read and record their own self-hypnosis scripts for personal life-improvement use. Stage and street hypnotists will study, memorize and perfect pre-talk, induction, deepener and hypnotic phenomena demonstration skit scripts. Clinical hypnotherapists must master the content of suggestive or prescriptive therapy scripts for use with their clients.
Hypnosis scripts are available from a variety of sources in a variety of styles. You can buy books full of scripts, download instant e-book scripts from the Internet, or write your own. You will find that scripts come in three general formats: 1) those that are completely grammatically correct, like an English 101 paper, 2) those that make full use of the intricacies of hypnotic language and therefore may not be so grammatically correct, and 3) those that are transcripts from actual live sessions, which most English teachers would tear apart with their bloody red pen, but most accurately reflect the stuff you need to learn about hypnosis practice.
There are uses for all three kinds of hypnosis scripts. ‘Perfect’ scripts are good for getting the fundamental process across, organizing the steps you will take for an induction or suggestive session, the key components of prescription for specific issues, and so forth.
However, ‘perfect’ scripts are not always the most therapeutically beneficial. The language used for effective suggestion is not always grammatically correct. Sentence fragments are used, contractions are used here but not there, and sometimes words are just made up. Hypnotic language is often vague and confusing, and uses nominalizations or other wording that effectively avoids resistance and encourages compliance in the subconscious, but again, lacks proper semantics.
Additionally, it can be difficult to impart the proper inflections, pauses and so forth that your voice will emphasize when you speak to your subjects, and so you will need to read the scripts several times, practice reading aloud, and use some common sense when performing such pre-arranged scripts.
And in doing so, you will likely find that in your final delivery, you will alter the wording even more to suit your own style and the specific goals of your subject. The result will likely be much more like a transcribed script, which when read aloud will demonstrate obvious stumblings or direction changes the hypnotist took in response to the client, in order to better meet their needs.
The best advice, whether you are a clinical hypnotherapist or a stage or street hypnosis performer, is to study as many scripts pertaining to your venue as possible. This will provide you with a vast range of approach options to use with your clients, so that you can be flexible and adapt your style and content for various situations.
